Young Harris College is one of 17 institutions selected to participate in the Appalachian Regional Commission’s (ARC) Appalachian Teaching Project (ATP). ATP is an applied research training program during which students work with communities to address needs affecting long-term economic development. Participating students spend a semester developing projects to meet those needs, which they present at ARC’s annual ATP Symposium.

YHC students presented their research titled “Connecting Volunteerism, Science and Community Engagement to Protect Water Quality in a Southern Appalachian Watershed.” Pictured are Bethany Kenney, Mallory Downs, Matthew Cowart, Devin Filicicchia, Kelsie Floyd, Elizabeth Howell and Mikayla Escamilla. The students’ research was part of the Appalachian Regional Commission’s Appalachian Teaching Project, and the presentation took place at the annual conference in Washington, D.C.

Eight students from Young Harris College recently traveled to Washington, D.C. to present their research and experiences from a semester-long project about the importance of water quality in Southern Appalachia.

YHC students Darrien Henson, Mallory Downs, Aubrey Crowell, Caroline Cox, Mark Howington, Robert Moser and Hannah Walker (not pictured) presented their research on the Southern Appalachian Snorkeling Trail as part of the Appalachian Regional Commission’s Appalachian Teaching Project at the annual conference in Washington, D.C. Harrison Scott and David Thompson also participated in the research but are not pictured.

Nine students from Young Harris College recently developed the Southern Appalachian Snorkeling Trail and wrote a guidebook for the trail as a result of their research on preserving the region’s water quality by promoting native fish diversity and ecotourism. Over the past few months, the students have presented their work in Washington, D.C., Cordele, Georgia and Asheville, North Carolina.

Young Harris College is pleased to announce that the campus now has three charging stations for electric vehicles. With the new 220-volt, 30 amp charging stations, electric car owners can charge their vehicles up to six times faster than charging from a standard wall outlet.
